When Canada Recognised Smalltalk!

Canada gave a shout-out to Smalltalk more than 30 years ago! In 1983, TVOntario produced a television series called Bits and Bytes, hosted by Luba Goy and Billy Van. This 12-episode series taught Canadians how to use the personal computer.

In the final episode of the series, they discussed the future of computing and, of course, they recognised an important up-and-coming programming language. Jump to 11:45 in the following video:

That’s Adele Goldberg at Xerox PARC speaking. She was one of the key team members behind the creation of Smalltalk (the others were Alan Kay and Dan Ingalls).

It is fitting, then, that in 2019 we give another shout-out to Smalltalk with the JRMPC competition. For the past 20 years, Smalltalk has been one of the best-kept secrets in the programming industry.

Time to lift the veil.
